July 8, 2010

Dear parents and students,

I hope this letter finds you well and enjoying your summer.  I am looking forward to the upcoming school year and the 2010-11 Pepperell Dragon Band season, and I hope that you are as well.  Included in this mailing is band camp information plus summer/fall calendar pages, daily rehearsal times, and other information that you’ll need to know.

The Pepperell Band website has proven to be a great resource for keeping up with the latest band information.  Go to www.pepperellband.com for updates, calendar information, and more.  I hope that the website will continue to be an outstanding method of communication for the PHS Band family.

Band camp this year will be rookies and leadership for three days, then the full band Monday-Friday the following week.  Please see the daily schedule for the camp below:

                        parent show 8pm

Lunch each day is on your own.  Students may bring a lunch and stay on campus for the 12-2 break each day.  Due to the Braves schedule, there is only one evening rehearsal on Thursday.  Dinner for the Friday rehearsal will be provided for students, followed by our first band booster meeting and then the band camp parent show.

What you’ll need for band camp:

  • Tennis shoes, the functional kind (not the high-fashion kind, and please no Converse or the like; students must be able to “roll” their feet)
  • Shorts/light colored shirt
  • Gatorade and water will be provided for breaks.  Students may bring a personal water cooler if they would like.
  • Sunscreen
  • Pencil

What you’ll need for the season:

  • Black band shoes- fitted during camp for those needing new shoes.  Please know that no other black shoes are acceptable- only marching band shoes.  These will cost approximately $33 for a pair.
  • Black socks
  • Black band gloves- $3 per pair through the band anytime- students will need several pair through the season
  • Flip folder/lyre for stands music.  Flip folders are $7 including page needed.  I do not stock lyres, they may be obtained through Gadsden Music company.
  • Reeds/valve oil and other accessories such as a wire music stand for honor bands
  • All clarinet and sax reeds will be $2

Rome Braves and August rehearsals

We are still in the swing of things with the Braves in August, so the band schedule will accommodate those working.  Please check the web calendar at www.pepperellband.com to keep up with the August schedule this year.  Braves game day practices will be 3:30-6 with those working leaving about 5:00.  Due to the large number of eighth grade students marching up this year, all rehearsals will be in the afternoon from 3:30-6.  No evening rehearsals unless called well in advance.  One exception is the September 30 rehearsal from 6-9pm due to the Early Release schedule that day.

Schedule items

We will have a Saturday practice on September 11 from 9-5, to continue to prepare for our competition season.  All members are expected to attend, and lunch will be provided.  Saturday competition dates are October 2, 23 and 30.  The first competition is on October 2nd, which is the first weekend of the Fall Break.  Please make any plans beginning Sunday, October 3rd.  As with all Fall Breaks the band will not practice the week of October 4-8, however the band will perform for the October 8th home game.

Fundraising money will be applied to student accounts at the end of each fundraiser, and for the Braves, a tally will be kept using a $15-per-game figure that will be applied to band fees.  Remember, the Rome Braves fundraiser is a GREAT way to pay for band fees!!!!!

All band fees are to be paid prior to the first football game.  There isn’t a reason why students cannot have their fees paid on time this year.  The Rome Braves fundraiser has provided everyone with the opportunity to raise money by the first football game.  Anyone not with a zero balance by the first game will not march until fees are paid- thanks in advance!

Attendance Policy

Please note our policy, and see the Handbook link on the website for more details:

All rehearsals and performances are required.

A doctor’s note is required for missing a rehearsal.  If an absence is excused from school, that counts for band as well.  If a student is at school, they are expected to be at practice.  A doctor’s note is required to be excused in this case.

For more than one excused absences in a week, participation in the next performance is at the discretion of the band director.  If we feel they’ve missed too much that week to perform at the required level, then that student will be on the sideline for that performance.  An unexcused absence will result in the student being sidelined for the next performance.  Sidelining a performer means that for a ball game the student in question will participate in the stands, but will remain on the sideline for halftime.  More than one unexcused absence from rehearsals or performances will cause the student in question to be suspended from band activities.

While we cannot plan for illness or family emergencies, other absences are easily avoided.  Please schedule doctor/dentist appointments and other commitments when the band is not practicing.  For example, getting fitted for a Homecoming dress is not an excuse to miss practice!  Regular doctor and dentist appointments for the fall can be rescheduled now to avoid a conflict.  The rehearsal schedule through November is included with this letter.  Please look ahead- thanks!!

Pepperell Band Boosters

Thanks to our Band Booster group for their outstanding support, and I would like to take this opportunity to invite all parents to our first Band Booster meeting on Friday, July 30th at 6:30pm.  This meeting will be followed by our band camp parent show at 8:00.  Our parent group is one of the best around; please plan on being a part of this outstanding organization by volunteering your talents.  The band does not run itself; there are plenty of opportunities to help out and your child and the band need you!

With your help and support this will be one of the best years yet for the Pepperell Band!  See you soon!
